Do you want the Towcester bypass?

A recent article in the local paper confirmed that the council intend to press ahead with a bypass for Towcester despite significant opposition at the recent council open forums.

The front page article on the paper recited word for word the council's assertion that the people of Towcester need a bypass for the town to grow. Their claim completely disregarded a similar weight of opinion which was against the bypass for a number of reasons:

1. Towcester is a small town which barely supports the small shops that already exists. Towcester risks losing it's town centre like so many other bypassed towns in the country.

2. The traffic in Towcester is NOT bad at all. Compare the traffic in Towcester to that of, for instance, Bedford, and it is clear that the traffic "problem" is merely a perception. Traffic through Towcester is increased during the rush hour periods, but even then it only takes 5 minutes to get from the Racecourse to the A43 roundabout.

3. Building a bypass might destroy many historic homes and destroy the tranquil existence of many local villages, notably Wood Burcote. At the discussion forums earlier in the year a local councillor claimed that people in these villages shouldn't be allowed to take part in the discussion process, which is clearly anti-democratic.

4. With increasing fuel prices, and government priorities to curb the reliance on the car, the likelihood is that the traffic will actually fall over the next ten years. Fuel prices are likely to double again in the next 18 months and maybe double again in the following 18 months. Population is no longer increasing in the UK and car ownership is at saturation point.
